I had a revelation years ago when I first seriously started photography. Taking a studio portrait yet still trying to capture the spontaneity of the moment, all without getting the ‘cheese’ affect. The ‘real’ child truly appears when they are not saying “Cheese!”. Almost all children are trained to say cheese and this does not promote a natural smile…more often you get a grimace! I try giving my subject something to look happy about…doing something silly usually gets that lovely, warm smile.
But, it’s not always about the smile. Some parents get focused on having their children smile, but when they see the photos from the shoot oftentimes they prefer the serious photos where their child is deep in thought. In my gallery you’ll see many examples of those types of photos…as they are my favorites too.

My maternity sessions are always the shoots I can’t wait to start. I embrace the wonderful moms to be, full of excitement in waiting to hold their little bundle of joy. It is so fulfilling for me to share these special times with my clients and the anticipation of meeting baby is so amazing.
